AMELIA HOUSE

SERVICES

Community Services

DID YOU KNOW we provide services for approximately 210 clients each week. To provide services, we employ 20 full time staff (who work 5 days/week) plus 6 part time staff (approx 3 days/ week).  Most of the staff commence work each morning between 6.30 – 7.00am and finish at 5.00pm or later, one of their many challenges throughout the day is keeping to the times allocated on the roster; which for many different reasons (including traffic delays, unavoidable delays in banks, supermarkets, when a client is unwell or when another staff member is away) can change slightly, if the time change is significant you will be contacted.

It you have an appointment please call , preferably 1 week before, however if you can give more notice that would be even better.

Notice:                    Veteran’s Home Care Recipients.

There has been a change in the way that the Department of Veterans Affairs deals with Centacare for provision of Veteran’s Home Care Services.  Under the new contract, which commenced 1st January 2007, all service plans are allocated to a central office known as Centacareservices and not to Centacare’s individual service providers.

How will this affect You?  The only difference will be that your approval letter from Veterans’ Home Care will have a new phone number as the contact for Centacareservices, but this is an administrative process only.

Your in home support will still be provided through Amelia House Services and you will still deal  directly with them for day to day adjustments to rosters.

So   please   continue to contact  Dianne  to organize your in home assistance through Veterans’ Home Care.

Friday Men's Group

 From the Belmont Men

Friday continues to be the “Big Day Out” for men at Belmont.  Our group continues to grow, as does the level of support and friendship amongst the men.

As Belmont Program Manager it gives me great pleasure to see this part of our program continuing to be so successful.  To all the staff and members of the group, thank you for making our centre such a fun place to be on Fridays.

ANNERLEY SNIPPETS

ANNERLEY SNIPPETS

Hello from all the Annerley people. We hope the first half of 2007 has been a good one for you so far. Here at the respite centre, everyone has been busy with the usual activities (outings, concerts, in centre games and fun.)

There have been a few small changes.  The pick up times are the same and we ask that everyone try to be ready by 8.30, so there will be no surprises. If you are unable to attend respite for the day, please ring through to Amelia House on ph. 38472049 and leave a message.

There has been a change to the time that we generally have lunch, with it being decided to try lunch around 12:45, then load the buses at just after 2:00 with the drop off being done by the two buses. The group decided to have day raffles instead of week raffles so they get to see it drawn on the day that they attend.

If there have been any changes to your details  (eg.. contact telephone number for your family or emergency contact, medical condition or medication please bring it into the respite centre.)

We are back using the theme months, for the basis of activities at the respite centre. The month of June is flowers and trees, with many great pieces of art work being displayed through out the respite centre. One of the projects was to make place mats, there was a suggestion that we make some for other theme months, so if people still have some old Christmas card that they can bring into the centre for cutting up we would much appreciate it. Next month will see the centre at Annerley be transformed into ???????

We also have a very special birthday in the month of June, Dorothy is turning 99 years young, we hope all her wishes come true.

We would like to thank all the Volunteers who continue to show dedication to make Annerley the place it is.

We wish all Annerley members who aren’t well, all the best and a quick recovery. We also wish all the people who have left our service and their families, all the best.

Annerley Respite Centre will also be holding it’s own Melbourne Cup party this year. If you enjoy good company and a bit of fun, keep this day in November in mind. There will be more information as it gets closer.

  From the Annerley Centre Team

Community Connections

Coorparoo Capers

Winter is here again and since Easter the weather has been quite mild so our super soups will start again when the weather gets a little colder. One of the highlights since our last newsletter was the visit by Jenny Jones (Kym’s Mum) who led us in a session on flower arranging - we are quite clever when we try. Thank you to Jenny for your patience and creative flair.

Our Special lunch on Mother’s Day was a great success.  Congratulations Chris and Bev; there are plans for more special dinners and High Teas so keep your eyes open for more info.

We have just been notified of having been granted some funding to replace our worn out Ford Transit, so in the next few months we will be riding high in a nice new bus Hooray!!! We are still waiting on feedback for funding to replace our very tired old kitchen, and to give the house a bit of a face lift.

Have a look at the photos of our special guests for the Queen’s Birthday High Tea on Sunday 10th June, what an event! Congratulations to Robin, Chris, Bev, Julie, Justin and Pat for putting on such a great day. The event was a sellout and the feedback has been very complimentary.

We are trying to find a venue for our Melbourne Cup Party.  If you know of anywhere please let us know; we have to have access to a kitchen because we are catering for the function ourselves and it must be able to seat 150 people.

Amelia House is in need of volunteers on Thursdays and Fridays, so spread the word and if there is anyone interested please contact us on 3847 2049.

On a sad note we said farewell to Keith who passed away in April, we will miss his sense of humour.

Also Molly passed away on 15th June. Molly and previously her husband Ted, had been a part of the Amelia House family for more than 10 years.

Carer Support Program

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS WORKING AND CARING FOR AN OLDER PERSON ?

Through the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, Centacare has funds available to assist carers who are trying to “juggle” care for a frail older person and the demands of the workforce. This may be you, or someone you know.

If you are the main person who provides ongoing assistance to enable the older person to remain living in their home, then you are a carer. There is no requirement that you live with the client, or are related to them.

This definition includes carers who are studying to enter the workforce, or who are doing voluntary work for the same reason.

Unfortunately, this funding has only been made available to carers of people over 65 (or over 50 if indigenous).

Is there a cost?

As with most government funded programs, there is a requirement that we ask for a client contribution.  This would normally be $5.00 per hour or $35.00 for a 2-day and overnight stay.

However, THIS IS NEGOTIABLE, and can be reduced or waived if necessary – it is more important that the carer receives the service they need.

Who do you contact?

Please call Centacareservices Carer Support Program on

1300 558 054

Sharron or Nerissa will discuss the situation with you and work out how the program can help. Referrals are taken from either the carer him/herself or a supporting service provider. Centacareservices Employed Carers Program is an Australian Government initiative.

On The Buses

I know it's difficult to be patient when you're all dressed up for a much anticipated outing and THE BUS IS LATE!

But please remember delays are caused by:

  • other cranky drivers on the road
  • cranky passengers not ready
  • wet weather
  • traffic jams
  • accidents

and I could go on forever, but I won't.

So what am I trying to tell you?  Please be patient when waiting for the Bus because...

Yes, we can get held up.

Should Carers have an important appointment to keep, please advise your Centre so we can make the necessary arrangements

Regards
